Folded Wuhan Yangtze River Club Investor Promises To Pay Off Salary Debts

BEIJING

Wuhan Yangtze River will go on to pay off its players, coaching staff and employees' salaries after it has folded as a professional club, its investor Yan Zhi said.

The Wuhan club, which was relegated to the second-tier league after finishing third from bottom in the 2022 Chinese Super League season, announced its decision to quit Chinese professional football on Wednesday.

This announcement came as no surprise amid rumors claiming that the financially stricken outfit would soon call it quits.

Yan, the chief executive of Wuhan Yangtze River's parent company, promised that the club's players, coaching staff and employees will get their unpaid money.

"The first team's salary has been paid off," he wrote on social media.

"Except those coaches and players who have payment disputes with the club, others will be paid in full," he said.

The Wuhan club noted in its announcement that an unnamed coach and the players he introduced to the team have not been remunerated.

The Wuhan side folded less than one month after its cross-city rival Wuhan Three Towns won the Chinese Super League title.

"It's time for Zall (Yan's company) to quit as Wuhan's professional football is flourishing," Yan said.
