The Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE), Prime Minister's Office (PMO), has compiled a Labour Market Statistics (PPK) report, which includes the latest estimates of the number of jobseekers as well as the new recruitment in employment.
According to a JPKE press release, the labour market indicators for February 2016 are as follows:
New recruitment in employment, based on the newly registered contributors in the Employees Trust Fund (TAP) was 495 persons, consisting of 32 persons working in the government sector and 463 persons in the private sector.
Overall, the number of newly registered contributors in TAP from January to December 2015 was 6,800 persons, while from January to February 2016 it was 1,053 persons.
A total of 118 persons were newly registered as jobseekers at Local Employment and Workforce Development Agency (APTK), Ministry of Home Affairs.
As of February 2016, the number of jobseekers among locals (Brunei citizens and permanent residents) aged 18 to 59 years was 10,446 persons.
The Brunei Government has, meanwhile, implemented several initiatives in order to increase local participation in the country's job market especially in the private sector, through two approaches:
- enhancing the level of knowledge and skills of local '0' and 'A' level graduates by providing scholarships and training such as Special Scholarship Scheme (Skim Biasiswa Khas), Technical and Vocational Education Scholarship Scheme (Skim Biasiswa Pendidikan Teknikal dan Vokasional di Institusi Pengajian Swasta Dalam Negeri - BPTV), Technical and Vocational Education Scholarship Scheme (Skim Biasiswa Pendidikan Teknikal dan Vokasional) for Energy Industry Competency Framework Programme (BPTV-EICF) and Training and Employment Scheme (Skim Latihan dan Pekerjaan - SLP); and,
- providing more job opportunities to locals by reducing quotas for low-skilled foreign workers.
For further queries regarding statistics on local jobseekers, JPKE can be reached via 223-0250 or 223-3344 (office hours), info.statistics@ jpke.gov.bn or www.depd.gov.bn.
