​High blood pressure can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle. In addition to carrying out physical activities such as recreation or doing outdoor work, one can prevent high blood pressure by practicing a healthy diet.
According to the Ministry of Health, four food products that have a high sodium content are bread, crackers, instant noodles and canned or packaged food. From the aspect of consuming foods high in salt, adding salt while cooking and adding soy sauce to dishes or while eating is among the common habits in the country. Doctor Norhanani Nadzirah binti Haji Md Taib, a Medical Officer shared with RTB that among the steps to reduce salt intake include raising awareness and knowledge on the sources of salt in daily food. Choose low-sodium or no salt ingredients in cooking; Avoid using salt, cube or stock and sauce in one dish and practice the habit of reading food product labels. The public are also advised to limit or avoid salty foods.
Reducing the consumption of sodium plays an important role in protecting the people from non-communicable diseases. Reducing salt intake is one of the cost-effective ways to improve health. As advised by the Ministry of Health, improving eating habits is the responsibility of society as well as individuals, and a Whole-of-Nation and Whole-of-Society approach is required in making those changes.
