(KPL) An awareness activity was held at Tanmixay Secondary School, Vientiane to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Menstrual Health Day on May 26.

The celebration, the first of its kind in Laos, was joined by Ms Christina Seeberg-Elverfeldt, Head of the Development Cooperation, Germany Embassy to the Lao PDR, Mr Bounthan Sengmany, Deputy Director of the Vientiane Education and Sports Department, and over 100 local teachers and students.

The celebration aimed to raise awareness of menstrual hygiene and self-care among local students and teachers.

Menstrual Hygiene Day falls annually on May 28 to highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene management at a global level. It was initiated by the German-based NGO WASH United in 2013 and observed for the first time in 2014.

The celebration was co-organized by the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Regional Fit For School Project, GIZ and SEAMEO/SEAMEO Innotech, with funding from German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), represented by the German Embassy.

The participants were presented with information on menstruation and menstrual symptoms by domestic and foreign experts. They also toured booths of GIZ, UNICEF, UNFPA, Plan International, Care, PFHA Association and Youth Centre, and enjoyed a Q & A session on menstrual health.
