​Brunei Darussalam has made significant progress in health, from increased life expectancy, elimination of smallpox, malaria, polio, measles and rubella, to immunization coverage exceeding 95 percent. The Minister of Health explained the matter while at the 76th World Health Assembly, WHO in Geneva, Switzerland. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar also said that in Brunei Darussalam, the most significant improvement is the use of the mobile health application "BruHealth" which now has a coverage of over 90 percent of the population, management of health data infrastructure and the use of Artificial Intelligence, AI.
Two major initiatives have already been implemented including the establishment of an intelligence hub responsible for the automation of national disease surveillance and response activities, and the establishment of a Health Digital Unit to coordinate digital health transformation across healthcare services. He added, Brunei Darussalam is collaborating with the WHO to strengthen the function of the behavioural insights unit, understand individual behaviour, facilitate community cohesion and generate trust on health-related issues.
Brunei Darussalam's delegation to the Assembly included Her Excellency Dayangku Mazlizah binti Pengiran Haji Mahalee, Permanent Representative of Brunei Darussalam to the United Nations; and Doctor Ang Swee Hui, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Professional at the Ministry of Health. While in Geneva, the Minister of Health held a bilateral discussion with Yang Berhormat Doctor Zaliha Mustafa, Minister of Health Malaysia; and The Honourable Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health of Thailand on cooperation in the health sector which is important. The theme of this year's World Health Organization Assembly is “WHO at 75: Saving Lives, Driving Health for All".
