1MDB Suspect, Jho Low’s Alleged Associate Dies Of Sudden Illness, Say Reports

PETALING JAYA

Multibillion ringgit 1MDB scandal suspect, Kee Kok Thiam, who was arrested and released by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) earlier this month, has died.

He is believed to have died of a sudden illness, reported China Press.

According to Sin Chew Daily, an MACC official confirmed Kee's death.

He was arrested and released after having his statement recorded by the MACC earlier this month.

The daily also said that a check at the Jinjang Funeral Parlour in Kepong confirmed Kee's brief wake on Tuesday, with the funeral to be held on Wednesday (May 31) morning.

Several people who were present and believed to be family members, said they "know nothing" when approached.

According to the obituary, Kee, 56, whose funeral is expected at 10am, will be cremated at the Kepong Crematorium later.

Kee was one of the several individuals who confirmed with the authorities that fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, was in Macau, along with a few others wanted in the 1MDB investigation.

He was said to be one of Low's close associates.

Malaysian authorities have been trying to repatriate Low for years.

He was first charged in absentia in 2018 by the Sessions Court with eight counts of money laundering and issued a warrant of arrest for his role in 1MDB.

Low publicly declared his innocence that same year.
