Discover Petronas Petronas @Schools (DPS) Tawau 2023, which aims at enhancing students’ awareness of the Petronas Education Sponsorship (PESP) and providing exposure to careers in the oil, gas and energy industry, was successfully held here recently.

The programme also highlighted Petronas’ commitment in supporting the government’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiatives, providing students with opportunities to explore various education pathways after Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) in collaboration with selected TVET institutions in Sabah.

A total of 520 Form 3-5 students and 65 teachers from 23 schools in the district participated in the programme at SJKC Kung Ming on June 10.

The event was attended by Tawau District Deputy Education Officer, Student Development Sector, Vaea Sarima, and Head of Human Capital Investment, Petronas Group Human Resource Management, Syed Mohammad Muhafiz Syed Mohd Bakar.

Petronas also continued its collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Petrosains to promote the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) initiative through interactive forums and activities.

It also featured sessions by Petronas young professionals from Sabah, serving as role models and showcasing the diverse range of career opportunities available in the industry.

One of the participants Daryn Chia, 17, from SM St Patrick, described the programme as immensely beneficial.

“The exhibitors skilfully presented their insights through demonstrations and numerous examples, thus enriching our understanding. It allowed us to delve into topics that are not extensively covered in our school curriculum, such as robotics and drones by Petrosains. Thanks to DPS, I now have a deeper understanding of these subjects.”

Chairman of National Counseling Teachers Council (MGKK), Tawau District, Darwis Ambo Sakka, said the hands-on programme provided meaningful information to students.

“The PESP briefing provided valuable insights into Petronas sponsorship opportunities, which I can now share with my students. The booth activities offered in-depth information about upstream, downstream, and other job opportunities in the TVET and oil, gas, and energy sector,” he said.

Nur Hazwani Nurdin, 17, a student from SMK Pasir Putih, experienced a significant shift in her perception of Petronas after participating in the DPS Tawau 2023 programme.

“My previous perception of Petronas solely as an engineering entity has dramatically changed after attending this programme. I discovered my passion for drilling and was fascinated by the rocks unearthed during oil excavation. Wearing the official researcher attire fuelled my drive for success.”

Meanwhile, Ummi Syazrina Munshi Abdullah, a teacher from SMK Balung, said, “Throughout the programme and specially curated briefing session for guidance and counselling teachers, we received a wealth of new information regarding Petronas education sponsorship and Universiti Teknologi National Counseling Teachers Council (UTP).”

“This session provided us with a unique opportunity for one-to-one interaction with Petronas staff, allowing us to ask any questions we had about both the sponsorship and the institution. Such information will greatly assist us in effectively guiding our students towards pursuing further studies and careers after completing SPM and STPM,” she added.

Tawau District Deputy Education Officer, Student Development Sector, Vaea Sarima, commended the programme, saying “I strongly advocate for the programme as it offers comprehensive information about Petronas’ educational sponsorship, enabling students to make informed decisions about their educational and career paths,” he said.

To date, DPS has benefitted over 25,000 students and teachers across the country.
