The Law Enforcement Unit of the Kuala Belait and Seria Municipal Department recently imposed a compound fine of$100 on an individual for the indiscriminate dumping of items in a public area, including an unused mattress, boxes and some chairs.
The individual has been given seven days to settle the fine, and failure to do so will result in the matter being referred to court. Under Chapter 30 of Section 12 (1) of the Minor Offences Act, convicted first-time offenders will receive a fine of $1,000, or a month of imprisonment.
Meanwhile, for repeat offenders, the penalty is a fine of $3,000 or a prison term of three months.
The Law Enforcement Unit is urging the public to dispose of unwanted items in allocated bins, while companies are reminded to maintain standards of cleanliness on their premises and comply with the regulations under the Minor Offences Act.
