BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The Magistrate's Court yesterday sentenced a local man to 16 months in jail for theft in a dwelling. Awangku Abdul Malek bin Pengiran Idrus stole $100 from a residence at Kg Sungai Hanching between 7pm and 8pm on October 3, 2016.

Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman saw that the defendant was not remorseful as he just got out of jail in July 2016 for a previous conviction.

Prosecutor Raihan Nabilah Haji Ghazali informed the magistrate that the defendant rode home with another person driving a car when they decided to stop at the area of Mamih Restaurant's building.

With theft in mind, the defendant went to the first floor of the building and entered a staff house of the restaurant and seeing that nobody was around, he proceeded to enter a bedroom.

The defendant found a bag from which he took the $100 and left the building with the other person.

Them defendant gave $20 to the other person and spent another $10 on fuel for his car.

The occupants of the staff house, upon realising the theft, lodged a police report, which led to the defendant's arrest.
