Strong leadership and innovative spirit are the pre-requisites to navigate organisations through troubled waters, said the Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Haji Apong.
"In the current global economic uncertainty and a myriad of complex challenges, good leadership means taking chances to make changes - changes that improve operations, enhance processes and cultivate new ideas to achieve greater success," he said at the opening of LEADCON 2016, a one-day leadership conference organised by the Centre for Islamic Banking, Finance and Management (CIBFM) and supported by Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam (AMBD), at The Empire Hotel & Country Club yesterday.
Dramatic changes in the world economy in recent years mean that normal ways of doing business have to be transformed rapidly, he added.
"Here is where great leaders are needed to energise and bring their respective organisations forward to innovate, as challenges are frequently opportunities in disguise."
ForMuslims,Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) himself is a great role model and an exemplary and timeless leader. His leadership was greatly admired by even non-Muslim leaders such as George Bernard Shaw and Mahatma Gandhi. The Prophet embodied the characteristics of a great leader through his words and actions which are Siddiq (truthful), Fathonah (intelligent), Tabligh (communicative) and Amanah (trustworthy), the minister said.
Through our visionary leader His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang DiPertuan of Brunei Darussalam's wisdom and vision, the people in the Sultanate have been blessed with a high quality of life and also a peaceful environment, he added.
"Under His Majesty's guidance, we prepare our current and future generations for an even better future in terms of education, health and economy by creating the Brunei Vision 2035. This means we strive for continuous improvement where we set key performance indicators for the desired goals to be achieved by 2035 and we have able leaders responsible for those Key performance indicators."
Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali also noted that the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Framework by AMBD and CIBFM would help build and enhance individuals' skills and expertise in the financial services industry, including leadership.
By increasing the level of professionalism among market players in the country, public confidence in financial institutions will be enhanced.
As the framework involves extensive collaboration between the CIBFM team, the regulatory units of AMBD and the financial industry, I am confident that it (the framework) will be beneficial and relevant for the development of the industrial sector in line with Vision 2035, the minister added.
Themed 'Leadership and Innovation in a Changing Global Environment', the conference provided a platform for local and global leaders to share their experiences and provide new perspectives on leadership and innovation, and at the same time, highlighted the initiatives carried out by CIBFM and AMBD to promote the nation as a prominent knowledge hub.
