A tropical low-pressure system, which formed in the East Sea on Sunday afternoon, is predicted to bring torrential rains to the northern and central regions between Monday and Wednesday.

The National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting warned on Monday that heavy rains, with a rainfall of 100-300mm, will hit the northern region until Wednesday. At the same time, central localities stretching from Nghệ An Province to Quảng Ngãi Province will experience showers with higher rainfall of up to 350mm.

The centre also said by 10am on Monday, the eye of the tropical low-pressure system, was 250km east-southeast of Đà Nẵng City. The strongest wind speed near its eye reached 39-49km per hour.

The tropical low-pressure system was moving west at 10-15km per hour.

It was forecast to make landfall on the mainland of Quảng Trị Province and Quảng Nam Province at 10am on Tuesday and weaken into a low-pressure system over the Việt Nam–Laos border area at 10pm on Tuesday.

Due to the influence of the tropical low-pressure system, the northern part of the East Sea, including Hoàng Sa (Paracel) Archipelago, and the middle part of the East Sea will face high waves of 2-4m while the southern part of the East Sea will get high waves of 2-3.5m.

Between Sunday night and Monday morning, due to the influence of a tropical low-pressure system, showers with a rainfall of 30-120mm hit Đà Nẵng City.

Inundation reportedly occurred on many roads in the city’s downtown streets of Trưng Nữ Vương, Núi Thành, Trần Hưng Đạo, Ngô Quyền and Nguyễn Hữu Thọ, causing many vehicles stalled.

According to a report at 5am on Monday by the city’s Border Guard Command, the total number of vessels moored at wharves was 848 ships.

The number of offshore vessels was 107, including one ship with the plate number DNNA 90709 operating in the dangerous area, triggered by the tropical low-pressure system. The ship was informed to move to Quảng Ngãi Province’s territorial water to avoid.

The command also told relevant units to be ready for emergencies.

In Quảng Nam Province, local administration had ordered a sea ban from 7am on Monday until a new notice to ensure the safety of local vessels and people.

In Thừa Thiên Huế Province, the provincial Border Guard Command said the province scheduled to fire signal flares at five areas to remind offshore vessels to find out safe shelters.

The command has told relevant units to use search and rescue information channels to notify owners of offshore vessels about the developments of the tropical low-pressure system so that fishermen can proactively avoid it and not enter dangerous areas. — VNS
