The Magistrate's Court yesterday adjourned a corruption case involving a managing director of a Brunei construction and realty company who has been barred from entering Brunei to make way for further inquiries before the prosecution pursues further.
Liew Say Khoo, was extradited to face a charge of bribing Superintendent Haji Khairur Rijal bin Haji Abu Salim with a pick-up vehicle sometime in 2012 in order for him to assist Liew in repeatedly entering and exiting Brunei between 2011 and 2013.
Liew was expelled from Brunei after serving a two-year jail sentence passed in 2007 for the assault of his girlfriend, not amounting to culpable homicide, causing her death.
Haji Khairur Rijal was charged in court in 2015 with receiving bribes and abuse of power but shortly after the prosecution entered a nolle prosequi to the case, where then the Internal Security Department took over and detained him for his involvement in crime syndicates locally and overseas in which he had abused his powers and risked national security.
Liew's defence counsel, Roy Prabhakaran, applied for bail but was denied by Chief Magistrate Muhammed Faisal bin Pehin Dato Kefli.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Christopher Ng was given three weeks to finalise the case until the further mention of the case on November 29.
Liew is to be detained at Jerudong Prison until then.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau's investigations said the defendant was arrested in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia by the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission after the warrant outside jurisdiction was executed which is a result of the joint efforts between Brunei and Malaysia's anticorruption bodies with the coordination of Brunei's Attorney General's Chambers' Mutual Legal Assistance and Extradition Secretariat.
The defendant was then surrendered to Brunei's Anti-Corruption Bureau.
