President Marcos has congratulated Gilas Pilipinas and three other Filipino athletes for clinching gold medals from the 19th Asian Games on Friday, Oct. 6.

Marcos said this after Gilas Pilipinas ended a 61-year drought when it defeated Jordan with a score of 70-60.

In his X (formerly Twitter) post, the President congratulated Gilas Pilipinas for putting the Philippines on the map.

"I know every Filipino is proud to be called one today. Congratulations, Gilas Pilipinas, on this incredible feat!" he wrote Friday evening.

"Your hard work continues to elevate Filipino athleticism and sportsmanship to the global arena," he added.

President Marcos also congratulated jiu-jitsu stars Margarita Ochoa and Annie Ramirez for giving Team Philippines gold medals on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

According to Marcos, Ochoa's comeback earned the country its second gold medal and proved that martial arts mastery runs deep in Filipinos' veins.

The Chief Executive then said Ramirez' impressive victory, dedication, and triumph exemplify the Filipino spirit of excellence.

Meanwhile, President Marcos lauded the world's second-best pole vaulter, EJ Obiena, for his "outstanding performance" that gave the Philippines its first gold medal from the 19th Asian Games on  Sept. 30.

As of Friday evening, Oct. 6, the Philippines has earned 4 gold medals, 2 silvers, and 12 bronzes from the 2023 Asian Games.
