Residents should refrain from constructing illegal drain covers that would ultimately result in flooding in residential areas, said Kuching South mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.

He said such construction would cause flooding whenever there is a heavy downpour, as the rainwater cannot be properly discharged through the drainage system.

“Just imagine when there is a heavy rainfall and the rainwater cannot be quickly discharged – the water might even flow into your house compound,” he said in a Facebook Live video during the handover of drainage upgrading projects at Lorong Keranji 4G and Lorong Kedandi 6, here yesterday.

Wee also pointed out that drains that had been illegally covered posed difficulties for drainage-cleaning works to be carried out.

He explained that some residents wanted to illegally extend their car porch by covering the drain, but this would result in other issues.

Nonetheless, the mayor assured that infrastructure development works have actively been carried out in phases in the past months.

“We also hope residents can be the eyes and ears of the council for the betterment of the community, since there are many residential neighbourhoods and commercial areas under the jurisdiction of MBKS (Kuching South City Council),” he said.
