KUALA LUMPUR

A total of 561 undocumented foreigners were detained by the Immigration Department following an integrated operation at the Baiduri Apartments at Bandar Tasik Kesuma, Beranang.

Immigration Department director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh said those detained were from Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Indonesia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, Cambodia, Sierra Leone and Cameroon aged between three months and 55.

"The operation started at about 11pm on Friday (Jan 19).

"We inspected 752 foreigners following complaints from the public on undocumented foreigners or PATI living in the area," he said.

While there were attempts by some foreigners to escape, the raiding team had the area well cordoned off, he said.

"Some 80% of the residents at the apartments are foreigners.

"It has a high density occupancy and unsavoury living conditions thus distressing residents in the surrounding area.

“The department also detected various offences committed,” he said.

"We detained the undocumented foreigner for various offences including not having personal identification documents, overstaying and other offences under the Immigration Act.

"Those detained were brought to the Immigration Depot in Bukit Jalil for further investigation," he said.

The operation consisted of 455 Immigration officers, 60 General Operations Force (GOF) personnel, 12 National Registration Department officers and five personnel from the Civil Defence Force.

Among those who were present were Immigration deputy director-general (Operation) Jafri Embok Taha, Immigration deputy director-general (Control) Datuk Ken Anak Leben, Immigration Enforcement director Mohd Jasmi Mohd Juwahir, Selangor Immigration director Khairrul Aminus Kamaruddin and Kuala Lumpur Immigration director Wan Mohammed Saupee Wan Yusoff.
