MoH's Quit2Win Programme Concludes

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The Sayyidina Husain Secondary School yesterday held a closing ceremony for the 'Quit2Win Remaja 2016' anti-smoking programme at its multipurpose hall.

In welcoming remarks, the Deputy Principal of Administration, Cikgu Juraidah binti Haji Tamin, said that the programme was carried out with assistance from the Health Promotion Centre, Ministry of Health (MoH) and ran from April 7 until November 17.

"The programme was intended to instil a nonsmoking mindset among the students to not pick up the habit, which in reality brings many dire consequences to their health. Apart than that, diseases spurred from the smoking habit have a huge impact on rising medical costs in the country, which we receive for free," she remarked.

"The treatment for cancer caused by smoking habits has also proven to be costly and is a burden to the country. In relation to this, the Ministry of Health is monitoring and overcoming this problem from its roots, so that this problem doesn't persist."

Through the Quit2Win programme, various activities were conducted to encourage and motivate students to stop the smoking habit. The school selected a number of students - identified to have the habit - to take part in the programme.

The students attended briefings on smoking regulations, the dangers of smoking and vaping, the religious perspective on smoking, as well as on methods for quitting smoking.

Additionally, the programme also featured a talk by an ex-smoker, individual sessions with a counsellor, as well as a routine and impromptu examination to monitor body weight and a smokerlyser test.

During yesterday's ceremony, Cikgu Juraidah presented medals and prizes to students in the programme who have successfully kicked the habit.

The Best Counsellor Award was also presented to Noorizan binti Haji Idris, while the Best Focal Teacher Award went to Cikgu Hajah Maimunah binti Dato Paduka Haji Mat Tusin.

The event concluded with a presentation of prizes to participants of a poster creation competition related to the anti-smoking campaign, followed by a group photo session.
