Al-Quran Reading Competition For Seniors Held

Haji Ayub bin Haji Abdul Ghani, from the Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit Mosque in Mukim Kilanas; and Hajah Norhayati binti Haji Ahmad, from the RPN Kampong Mentiri Mosque, emerged as first-place winners yesterday, in the men and women's categories of an Al-Quran reading competition for mosque congregants aged 40 and above.
Both were awarded trophies a. cash Prize of $1,000 each, and sightseeing trips sponsored by Ben Kassim Money Changer.
Prizes were presented by the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Aziz bin Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Haji Mohd Yusof.
Second places went to Haji Ibrahim bin Haji Mohd, from the Mohamed Bolkiah Mosque in Kampong Serusop; and Hajah Hamidah binti Ghafar from the Jame' Air Hassanil Bolkiah, with a cash prize of $700 each.
In third place were Haji Abidin bin Haji Matarsad from the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha Mosque in Kampong Rimba; and Rozinawati @ Noramalina Rafizah binti Haji Zainal from the RPN Kampong Mentiri Mosque, with a cash prize of $500 each.
The Director of Mosque Affairs, Haji Abdul Raj id bin Haji Mohd Salleh, said that his department regularly conducts reading competition for children and youths. "But this inaugural competition for seniors has attracted readers as old as 74 years, signifying that age does not inhibit one to study and recite from the Al-Quran," he said.
Thirty-seven readers, including 12 women, took part in the competition held on Wednesday and Thursday, which was jointly organised by the Mosque Affairs Department and the Mohamed Bolkiah Mosque Takmir committee Serusop.
