BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The Ministry of Education yesterday organised a thanksgiving and appreciation ceremony to mark the completion of the Bursari Riayah Wa Mahabbah Scheme at the Pusar Ulak Primary School.

Present as the guest of honour who later presented prizes to students in various categories and certificates for the `Volunteer Teaching Assistance' was Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, the Minister of Education.

The Bursari Riayah Wa Mahabbah Scheme is a programme carried out by Ministry of Education (MoE) with the CSR Unit of Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) based on a Memorandum of Understanding that was signed in March 2016.

Under this programme, MoE and BIBD jointly provide assistance and facilities to further maximise the development of students' academics.

In his speech, Acting Senior Special Duties Officer, Haji Mohd Sharifuddin bin Haji Mohd Salleh explained that the programme was one of the initiatives by MoE to help Year 6 students in the preparations for their PSR examinations. For the programme, a total of 40 students were selected and placed in the Duli
Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College hostel and they were undergoing their studies at Pusar Ulak Primary School since last February 2016.

He added that among the objectives of the programme was to ensure that these pupils will not be left behind especially in the aspect of academic learning; providing a conducive learning environment for their academic and social development; offering a pro-academic style of living; ensuring some underprivileged students to have the same learning opportunities like others as well as instilling the spirit of self development in them so that they would be more independent.

"All of these elements are vital in moulding students to be self reliant in all aspects so that they would be holistically well-rounded in line with MoE's mission in seeing the students achieving their maximum potential," he said.

During the programme, 12 experienced primary school teachers organised night class study groups for the students for them to further excel in their learning.

"Alhamdulillah, these students have shown impressive academic achievement based on 3rd checkpoint assessment which was carried out in August and showed positive results for all subjects, except for Mathematics," he added.

On this note, he added that the
ministry has acknowledged the needs in improving Mathematics results among the students. Therefore, he explained that the ministry has carried out intervention programmes as well as support from volunteer teaching assistance to help the lead teacher to conduct small study groups so, that they would focus more on the subject.

Due to this intervention, students scored grade A-C, with a 30 per cent increase in English and 17.5 per cent increase in Science.

Also present at the ceremony was Deputy Minister of Education, Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar; Haji Minorhadi bin Haji Mirhassan Head of Government Relation and Special Project at BIBD, and Permanent Secretaries at the Ministry of Education.
