14 individuals comprising locals, permanent residents and foreigners aged between 18 to 61 were apprehended by the Narcotics Control Bureau, NCB, believed to be involved in drug trafficking and misuse of drugs.
All were detained during 'Operasi Lucky Ape' carried out on the 25th and 26th of January 2024, targeting a Syabu smuggling and trafficking syndicate in the remote areas of Kampung Menunggol, Pulau Berambang and Kampung Bolkiah. The syndicate's mastermind was a 36-year-old local, who was believed to be using young people for drug trafficking activities by making them as runners, and storing as well as collecting drugs from the supplier. The mastermind was also found to be collaborating with a drug trafficker, a 42-year-old local man who had been arrested before.
From the operation, NCB seized 737.82 grams of Syabu and drug paraphernalia, believed to be used for processing drugs for trafficking, from one of the suspects aged 18. The confiscated drug was estimated to be worth over 140,000 dollars and could have been consumed by 7,300 drug abusers. The case will be investigated under Section 3A of the Misuse of Drugs Act, Chapter 27 for the possession of controlled drugs for the purpose of trafficking. If found guilty with the amount of drugs confiscated, it can lead to death by hanging.
During the operation, a vehicle and cash amounting 5,214 Brunei Dollars, 477 Singapore Dollars and 110 Malaysian Ringgit believed to be drug trafficking proceeds were also seized. The seized items will be investigated under Section 3 of the Criminal Asset Recovery Order 2012.
The NCB reminds youths to NOT be deceived by drug trafficker's tactics of offering lucrative rewards for carrying out illegal activities.
