The nation’s favourite and most sought-after dog breed has been revealed — and no, it’s not a Corgi.

A Groodle – also known as a Goldenpoodle – is a cross between a golden retriever and a poodle, and with 955 potential buyers per dog advertised, these cuddly pups are in high demand.

Next on the list were Dobermans, with 794 views per listing, and Maltipoo dogs with 779.

The study, conducted by pet marketplace Pets4Homes, analysed the sales and adverts placed on the site.

The Groodle took the crown ahead of loads of other well known breeds, such as Cavalier King Charles spaniels, Golden Retrievers, whippets and Hungarian vizslas.

There were a couple more crossbreeds in the rankings, too, with the more well known Labradoodle (cross between a Labrador and a poodle) placing sixth with 727 views per listing, and Cavapoo – a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Toy Poodle – at seven, with 724.

‘After the baby boom of the pandemic, many homes are searching for dogs which will go well with their new, young family,’ said Axel Lagercrantz, CEO of Pets4Homes.

‘Goldendoodles are typically very good with children and other pets and dogs, are calm around humans and are naturally curious and playful.’

Meanwhile, smaller ‘handbag’ dog breeds (think Chihuahuas, Frenchies and sausage dogs) are losing popularity, as are muscle breeds like XL bullies, which have now been banned.

Lagercrantz said: ‘In a year where muscular dogs have been at the centre of much publicity, our message to prospective owners of how much care and management these breeds require has been getting through to consumers.

‘We have been proactive for many years on our site in advising the needs of these breeds and the careful management of their temperament. We have seen a decline in the purchase of such dogs across the board.’
