Sam Faulkner wanted to get a 'professional cake' for her brother Graham's special 30th birthday but she was 'distraught' when it arrived in a 'laughably bad' state

A sister's kind gesture flopped when she organised a "professional cake" for her brother's birthday, only to be "distraught" by what she recieved.

A classic birthday party is usually accompanied with a big cake and candles - some make their own, others head out and buy one in the supermarket or some pay that little extra for a specially made one. Sam Faulkner wanted to go all out for her brother Graham's birthday as he was turning 30.

Sam, who lives in Calcot, Reading, got in touch with a cake maker after seeing a fishing-themed cake on Pinterest that she knew her angler brother would love.

She contacted "Emma Beth Mh" on Facebook - an account that has now been deleted - to recreate the picture from the CakerStreet.com, reports Berkshire Live. But when supposed-to-be special cake arrived, she was "distraught" - not only did it look nothing like what she asked for, it was covered in dog hairs.

Her mum Sue Faulkner took to Earley Residents Discussion Group Facebook page, writing: "Cake on left was what was ordered but cake on right was was we got! Trading standards?". Professional cake makers offered their support and advice for what her daughter could do.

Mrs Faulkner told BerkshireLive: "My daughter was distraught at when she opened the box. It was nothing like the picture. She'd paid half the money for the cake to this woman and what came back looked like it was made by a child. Honestly, it was laughably bad.

"The name Graham didn't even have a capital letter, it was that bad. I was very cross, so I said 'I'm putting it on Facebook '. Once I did that, it became clear there were other people who had encountered her as well. I tried to contact her and she blocked me straight away and deleted the page."

BerkshireLive also tried to contact "Emma Beth Mh" through Facebook, and the page was immediately taken down.

Mrs Faulkner said at the time: "I'm going to Trading Standards as she's clearly not a proper cake maker. We're now able to see the funny side of it afterwards, but at the time we were very upset. Even though we had a laugh about it, I still want to warn people this fake cake maker is out there producing these monstrosities and charging people for these terrible attempts at cakes."

Sue said the woman was initially reluctant to give her daughter her money back, but £15 has now been returned which is "about as good as we'll get".

It is believed the cake maker lives in Reading and a spokesperson for Reading Borough Council said at the time the authority had received complaints and was carrying out an investigation. The council added its Environmental Health team was also involved.
