Since early this year, the Fire and Rescue Department recorded more than 630 calls regarding forest and bush fires, affecting over 800 hectares of land nationwide. The fires were caused by the hot and dry weather.

The forest and bush fires also led to air pollution in some areas of the country, which can affect people's health and vision for road users due to thick smoke and haze. To further increase the efficacy of extinguishing forest and bush fires, the Fire and Rescue Department has increased patrolling and monitoring activities, including the use of drones and 'fire-bikes' to areas where fire often occur.

In this regard, the Fire and Rescue Department advises the public NOT to do open burning that can spread and become major fire; cut grass around the house or building compound to prevent fire from spreading quickly; not leaving flammable materials exposed to sunlight that can cause fire. The public is advised to be vigilant at their home as wildlife will find a place to hide, and put out any small fires without endangering themselves.

Any sign of a forest or bush fire, contact the Fire and Rescue Department at 995. Complaints of open burning activities can be directed to Talian Darussalam 123.
