Paying zakat or tithe is the fourth Pillar of Islam after fasting in Ramadhan. The meaning of zakat in terms of language is pure, clean, blessing, increasing and fertile, while in terms of syarak, it means giving out part of the property at a certain rate according to the conditions set to be distributed to the groups who are entitled to receive it.

This year, a total of 372 amils were appointed for 144 areas and places to collect tithe nationwide. While a total of 53 amils from the Brunei Islamic Religious Council, MUIB were appointed to collect tithe in all four districts. The nisab zakat fitrah rate for each person who eats fragrant rice is $2.84. While the nisab zakat for Siamese rice is $1.93 which is equivalent to the value of 2.268 grammes of rice.

The collection of Zakat Fitrah for 1444 Hijrah was over $1,002,003. While for the collection of zakat harta or property was more than $17,866,800.

Members of the public can also pay Zakat Fitrah online through the banking platform at Bank Islam Brunei Berhad (BIBD) and Perbadanan Tabung Amanah Islam Brunei (TAIB), and also through the applications of Datastream Digital Telecommunications Company, DST and Imagine Sendirian Berhad throughout the month of Ramadhan.
