A stable and happy family that supports the education, well-being, and safety of family members contributes to a healthy emotional, mental, and physical state as well as a productive workforce. In a message in conjunction with the International Day of Families 2024, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports stressed that all of the elements will contribute positively to the country's social and economic development.
The International Day of Families is celebrated around the world every 15th of May, in line with the United Nations, UN recognition of the family unit as the most important institution in society.
Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad shared several activities and initiatives that have been planned throughout the year, in collaboration with strategic partners from the government and non-government sectors nationwide, towards strengthening the family institution.
However, all parties, whether from government agencies, private sectors, organisations, institutions, penghulus and village heads as well as grassroots leaders, are hoped to continue to provide integrated commitment and cooperation, especially in organising celebration events at the national, district, mukim or village levels respectively, as well as at the level of organisations, associations, communities or among family members.
This year's theme for the International Day of Families is in line with Goal Two of the Wawasan Brunei 2035 which is High Quality of Life. The theme aims to raise awareness on how climate change impacts families and the role that they can play in climate action.
Climate-induced disasters have impacted livelihoods and well-being of families as well as disruption to infrastructure, economies, ecosystems and global food security. The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports emphasised that the community must be prepared and equipped with the right knowledge to help each other mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
Meanwhile, the theme of National Day of Families, 'My Family, My Hope' focuses on instilling the core values of Brunei families namely Love, Responsibility, Respect and Care, One Hope. The values of the Brunei Family Core that are fostered in the family can form the basis for a stable and prosperous society.
The focus is relevant to be applied in the planning and strengthening of the policy as well as family development programmes, and as a platform in the National Plan of Action on the Family Institution under the National Council of Social Issues which has been updated for 2023 to 2027 and will be launched this year.
