PETALING JAYA

Teo Ee Yi-Ong Yew Sin have continued to defy the odds at the Hong Kong Open.

The world No. 29 stunned South Koreans Kim Jae-hwan-Yoo Yeon-seong 11-21, 21-10, 21-18 in a 54-minute second-round match at the Hong Kong Coliseum to qualify for their first Superseries quarter-finals.

The Bitburger Open winners will take on world No. 2 Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen of Denmark for a place in the semi-finals.

“It’s great to beat the Koreans. Yeon-seong is an experienced player, so we targeted his partner ... and the plan worked,” said Ong.

“We will go out to gain as much experience as we can against the Danes. This will be the first time we are playing against them ... we are looking forward to it.”

Ee Yi-Yew Sin will be joined in the last eight by favourites and world No. 1 Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong.

Olympic silver medallists V Shem-Wee Kiong exacted sweet revenge over Zhang Nan-Liu Cheng of China with a hard-fought 19-21, 21-17, 21-16 win in the second round yesterday.

The Malaysians defeated Zhang Nan-Liu Cheng in the first round of the Denmark Open last month but lost to the same pair in the first round of the China Open last week.

National coach Jeremy Gan was thrilled to bits yesterday.

“I’m so happy that our first and second pairs are in the quarter-finals. Both played well. Ee Yi-Yew Sin are performing beyond expectations. It is good for the doubles department.”

Former international Chong Wei Feng kept Malaysian hopes alive in men’s singles when he beat India’s H.S. Prannoy 15-21, 21-11, 21-15 to reach the quarter-finals, where he will face another Indian shuttler – 22-year-old Sameer Verma.

“This is my first quarter-finals since I turned professional in May. I had a good draw,” said Wei Feng, 29.

“It won’t be easy against Sameer. I lost to him in the Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold this year.

Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei’s run came to an end after losing 21-10, 11-21, 9-21 to Denmark’s Kamilla Rytter Juhl-Christinna Pedersen in the second round. It was their fifth straight loss to the Danes.
