The discovery of more than 13,000 valuable artefacts from Brunei shipwrecks in 1997 is regarded as one of the most important finds in the history of maritime archaeology in Brunei Darussalam. The ships were believed to have originated from China, throughout Southeast Asia, as well as from local origins. In conjunction with the International Museum Day which is commemorated every 18th of May, RTB News shifted the spotlight on artefacts at the Brunei Shipwreck Gallery that were discovered during geophysical survey works that were carried out some 32 nautical miles off the Brunei coast, at a depth of 62 metres.
Ceramics, glass bracelets, beads, ivory and gemstones are among the artefacts on display at the Brunei Shipwreck Gallery. The discovery of such valuable artefacts illustrates Brunei's role in maritime trade with foreign nations from the late 15th Century till the early 16th Century. According to historical records, Brunei Darussalam was one of the most important trade centres in Southeast Asia, and was recognised as a busy port as numerous foreign ships sailed in to set up trade links.
Rich mineral and natural resources, and strategic geographical location in the Malay Archipelago constituted some of the success factors for Brunei as a trade centre. In observing the International Museum Day, members of the public can get the chance to get to know their museums in greater depth, whilst at the same time gaining an understanding of the functions and roles of the museum institution.
