A pet donkey named Diesel that went missing in California back in 2019 is believed to have found a new home amongst a herd of wild elk, and Brits are branding him an absolute 'legend'
In what can only be described as the real-life sequel to Shrek - it appears Donkey has a new family...
Around five years ago, Terrie and Dave Drewry's pet donkey Diesel was spooked during a hike in California and ended up running away from his owners. The couple gave up on their search for Diesel after weeks of looking for him - but it seems the equine didn't end up going too far.
That's because earlier this year, hunter Max Fennell was left baffled after spotting a herd of elk that had 'adopted' a donkey into its pack. "I can't get over seeing it and I'm amazed that the donkey looks happy and healthy!" he captioned the post.
The Drewrys are convinced the rogue donkey is Diesel and say they're overwhelmed with relief that he is safe. Diesel was spotted just a few miles away from where he first disappeared in 2019, near Clear Lake.
"To catch him would be next to impossible," Terrie told CBS. "He is truly a wild burro now. He's out there doing what he's raised to do."
The story quickly garnered national media coverage and attracted the attention of thousands of Brits, who say the donkey is 'living his best life' with his new family. "I like how he is front and centre of the herd," one user wrote on Instagram. "He has definitely found his home."
Another commented: "Nobody tell that donkey he's not an elk. He looks happy as can be." A third added: "That donkey is actually a legend!!" While a fourth joked: "Elk were like 'he's an ass, but we love him'."
