A goalkeeper is an important aspect of a football team to win matches. Goalkeepers play a role of up to 70 per cent in a team's success, and to be a good goalkeeper needs hard work and proper training.
The growing importance of the role of a goalkeeper in a team was underlined by FIFA instructor, Hamad Amer Al-Yami from Saudi Arabia who is currently in the country to conduct the FIFA Basic Goalkeeping coaching course from April 14-18, hosted by National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam's (NFABD) Football Development Department.
A total of 30 participants comprising local coaches will undergo the comprehensive training for five days at the multipurpose hall and artificial pitch at the NFABD House.
The course includes shot stopping, basic handling skills, game situations and positioning. Theoretical aspects are also integrated in addition to the practical aspects.
Hamad Amer also raised an important point of scouting good goalkeepers. He said, "Scouting for talents is important. Big clubs in Europe, Japan, South Korea and South America have scouts to look for gifted goalkeepers who have the height of at least above 185cm."
Executive Committee of NFABD, Haji Abdul Razak bin Haji Ibrahim officiated the opening ceremony of the course. In his opening remark, he stated, "NFABD has always pay serious attention on goalkeeper's course because the country still lacks qualified goalkeeping coaches."
Through the course, he said "it is hoped that Brunei will be able to produce coaches and goalkeepers who possess the qualities to be able to serve clubs, district teams and schools."
