The rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) has opened many possibilities in improving the lives of communities that adopt this Smart Nation concept, Telekom Brunei Berhad (TelBru) stated in a press release yesterday.
Though not limited to day-to-day essentials such as remotely monitoring traffic and vitals, among the potentials for this 21st Century concept is its implementation into natural disaster management that has, as of recently, garnered significant importance for countries around the world following the frequency of natural disasters worldwide.
As the leading telecommunications provider in Brunei, TelBru is gradually introducing this concept to the general population as a whole through its Smart Nation initiative, exploring new ways to assist in preparing for the future through infrastructure that have capabilities to provide Internet speeds of up to 10mbps as evidenced over the course of ARDEX-16 earlier this week for 250 participants from around the region and beyond.
The ARDEX-16 provided TelBru with the platform to showcase its Internet prowess in the midst of its nationwide fibre upgrade in both its wireless and landline services, with potential spinoffs in LoRa and IoT technologies that TelBru intends to introduce for, among others, natural disaster management, which rides on Internet connectivity.
When discussing disaster management, there are a few processes that form the links in the chain and work in tandem to complete the emergency management lifecycle.
The process starts with identification of risks, disaster preparedness, emergency response, resources allocation, reaction planning, and lastly disaster recovery. IoT can play a critical role in helping the disaster management agencies at every stage of this process," explained TelBru Chief Marketing Officer Lim Ming Soon.
TelBru's wireless technology has taken significant strides over the years, with expanded presence throughout the country.
To date, the company has installed Wifi networks in public places at over 85 locations with the numbers expected to grow over the coming months, with the aim to connect more people even while on the
move.
