JALAN PASAR BARU, GADONG

Erminio da Silva Pinto, Charge d Affaires of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to Brunei Darussalam, made a courtesy call to Dr Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal, Rector of Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) yesterday.

Timor-Leste - a nation which obtained independence in 2002 - is known especially for its educational institutions, with the courtesy call aimed at reviewing opportunities for cooperation in the field of Islamic studies.

Although Timor-Leste is still building its country in many aspects, it has the potential to build ties with neighbouring nations as well as using such opportunities to build their human resources.

Timor-Leste has a total of 1.2 million inhabitants and four universities, with two per cent of its population being Muslims who mostly speak Indonesian Malay.

The meeting touched on programmes offered in UNISSA which could help Timor-Leste students to improve their mastery of the Arabic Language.

UNISSA as a pure Islamic institution welcomes regional partners and is willing to work together to foster education and the advancement of Islam in the region.

The courtesy call was also attended by core officers from UNISSA.
