The police are fully-prepared to face any possibility of flooding in the state in terms of personnel strength and relevant assets.

Deputy state police commissioner Datuk Abdul Aziz Yusof said roughly 2,000 police personnel and 168 assets had been put on standby to be deployed to known flood-prone areas in the state should the need arise.

“If we look at the East Coast states like Kelantan and Terengganu, it has already begun to rain there. In Sarawak, we have already directed all district police chiefs to be on standby, particularly for districts that are known to be affected by floods,” he told reporters after a cheque presentation ceremony yesterday.

On a separate matter, Abdul Aziz stressed that the police would continuously monitor members of the force to ensure that standard operating procedures would be strictly adhered to.

He said the setting up of the Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) showed the seriousness of the police in gaining the trust of the community.

“The integrity of police personnel in Sarawak is still at a high level. At the same time, I urge the public to lodge reports should any member of the force is involved in corruption, misconduct or abuse of power,” he said, adding the number of such reports in Sarawak was ‘minimal’.

Earlier, Abdul Aziz presented cheques to 26 recipients under the Police Heritage Trust Fund (TAWP) – a programme that provides aid for retired members of the force, their dependents, as well as their next-of-kin.

“Although the amount of financial aid given is not that much, we can at least help ease some of the burden off the recipients when it comes to their daily expenses, educational or medical needs, as well as helping with funeral expenses,” he said.
