An express bus, carrying 26 passengers and two drivers, on its way to Sibu was destroyed by fire at KM30 Jalan Serian-Sri Aman, near Balai Ringin yesterday.

Fortunately, all the passengers and one driver were unharmed while the other driver sustained injuries on his hand and ears.

A Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) spokesperson said eight firemen from Serian were dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call around 3pm.

“The bus is 80 per cent destroyed following the fire. It was heading to Sibu first then Miri when the incident occurred,” he said, adding that the injured driver was sent to Balai Ringin clinic for treatment.

A Balai Ringin Bomba volunteer also came to help at around 2.30pm after being alerted by calls from members of the public, the spokesperson said.

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
