Participants of the first certified mobile app development course in Brunei Darussalam gave thumbs up to those who want to take the next step in the increasingly tech-savvy society.

Launched by Tech One Solutions Sendirian Berhad, the Mobile Application Development Course and certification are offered by iTrain Asia, a global leader in app development and related trainings.

Tech One Solutions and iTrain work in partnership to deliver mobile app courses and certification in a few countries in Asia including Brunei Darussalam.

All the selected Bruneian participants were fully sponsored by Tech One Solutions as part of its initiatives to uplift the software development capabilities among Bruneians.

The programme was organised with the guidance from Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) and the participants were primarily from the CodeNext 2015 initiative organised by AITI in association with TruSynergy.

The training was conducted by Wan Muzaffar bin Wan Hashim, corporate mobile development trainer with four years of mobile app experience from iTrain Asia.

At the end of the course participants sat for an online exam before receiving certification. The first course was focussed on Android platform, and in the coming months Tech One Solutions intends to introduce mobile app development courses on iOS and Windows platforms as well.

With the success of the first course, it is hoped that such courses will be able to create a bigger pool of mobile app developers in the Sultanate.

Dayang Noraidah binti Damit took the Android app development course with permission from her company BAG Networks.

"BAG always encourages us to learn new things, and the more things that you can do, the more things you can enhance. From that we can increase our innovative thinking. I took this course because I didn't want to limit myself to HTML, CSS and Javascript. This was the best opportunity, plus it's free!"

"I would highly recommend this course. I even got a good book to refer to on coding itself. It's very good. Our iTrain Asia trainer is not only a good programmer but also a good teacher. When we have errors, the trainer will stay with us and make us understand how to solve the problems," she said.

Another participant, Awang Md Dzulhakim Ilham bin Haji Md Yassin, co-founder of New Gate Plus, said, "Since I'm in a start-up company, we're currently doing some development work. After completing the course he hopes to make apps and sell it on Play Store.

"I used to make websites, so now I feel like after the course, I can put that on a mobile phone which means more people will reach it."

With all the basic requirements to build an application, he now believes that the participants can easily start moving into a direction where they are not limited to just creating systems or websites, but can create mobile versions of them.

"And now we no longer need to outsource for mobile developers. So now we're learning, we might take a year to fully become professionals, but now we're going there.

"Now we're at a stage where we can say okay, our development team can now start making our own mobile applications," he added.

He has actually started recommending the course to his friends.

"Right now start-up companies have begun to appear in Brunei.

"We have a lot of IT and technology based companies growing here and there, so I would recommend them to join this development programme even if they are not developers themselves. So this is definitely something they need to be able to not just do, but understand," he said.

Dayang Hajah Siti Hamizah binti Haji Bujang, a Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) student, said she actually took the course so that she can interact with devices such as car controllers.

According to her, she had a project about car controllers last year but she didn't have any basic knowledge to create Android apps. So, it (the course) was a good chance for her to learn and continue her project.

She said those interested in taking the course should have computer background and knowledge in programming languages like Java.

She said, "SnapFeed is made by someone, an outsider, actually it's good for Bruneian people to create apps, such as what trainer Wan Muzaffar said, 'Malaysians themselves created MyTeksi so Bruneians should create their own and stop buying from outsiders'. So it's a good chance for us to learn this course."
