KOTA KINABALU

Police arrested six people, including a woman, for stealing a bag belonging to a patient at the medicine waiting area at Likas Hospital in Kingfisher here on Monday.

The incident happened when the 55-year-old victim was waiting for his turn to collect medicine around 3.15pm on Jan 16.

A CCTV footage from the hospital showed two men approaching the victim before one of them tried to distract the victim by talking to his child.

The accomplice then took the victim’s bag from behind before both of them fled from the scene in a waiting Proton Iriz car.

Among the items reported stolen were a Barry Smith bag, a Samsung Note 5 hand phone, an international passport, ASB bank book and RM30 cash.

City police chief ACP M. Chandra said following a police report lodged by the victim, a police team managed to trace the vehicle and arrested one of the suspects at Sulaman Central around 4.35pm on Jan 17.

“Based on the CCTV footage from the hospital, police managed to trace the car’s registration number and arrested one of the suspects,” said Chandra.

Following the arrest, he said police immediately launched a manhunt and at 7.30pm the same day police detained two people, including a woman, at Oriental Hotel in Kolombong.

“Two hours later, police arrested another three men at a parking lot in front of Shangri-La Hotel in Bandaran Berjaya,” said Chandra, adding that the police also recovered the victim’s bag and seized a school bag, a Perodua Viva car, two powerbanks, a Samsung hand phone, a walkman and a meat cleaver.

Chandra also said that all the suspects, aged 26 to 48, were former convicts with previous criminal records.

He said they had been remanded for investigation under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft.
