BERAKAS, BRUNEI-MUARA

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) called for intensifying efforts to enrich Al-Quran knowledge and recitation skills to bring people closer to the holy book.

In his sabda while opening the finals of the National Musabaqah (Recitation) of the Al-Quran Competition for Adults 1437H/2016 at the Plenary Hall of the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas last evening, His Royal Highness said His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's Government thorough the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) has relentlessly been implementing various initiatives to bring the people closer to the Al-Quran.

"These initiatives entail people of all ages and encompass various facets - from mastering of it starting from literacy levels until the peak level in the study and propagation of Al-Quran knowledge," added His Royal Highness, while citing the Tilawah Al-Quran Scheme for Adolescents that was initiated in 1997 by the Islamic Studies Department (JPI) as a good example.

His Royal Highness said the scheme, which is aimed at grooming and training adolescents on renowned melodic reading of the Al-Quran, has reached its objective by continuously spawning the next generation of national qaris and qariahs. "We are now witnessing rising number of adolescents taking part in Al-Quran reading... even there are those who have already garnered success in national, regional and international competitions," he added, while calling on people of the country to deepen such noble efforts.

Based on these achievements, His Royal Highness said success is also centric to the spiritual development of youth and adolescents. "As main assets of our country, we have to strive harder to generate pious, righteous and decent human capital or talents, based on the teachings of the Al-Quran and As-Sunnah," he added.

His Royal Highness went on to say that the national development process driven by Islam and the Al-Quran will in turn spawn a generation which is intellectually active and proactive, which will allow them to spark motivation in the community to allow various positive changes. "This capacity building is highly relevant in its role to prevent negative phenomena and in handling any challenges the country face," he added.

His Royal Highness said this is also in tandem with the marvel of the Al-Quran, as a source of reference that emphasises intellectual development stemming from faith and life guidance. "This has evidently shaped the life of Islamic generations during the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)'s time, especially in building a civilised nation," he added.

Carrying the theme 'Al-Quran, the Spiritual and Physical Healer and Remedy', this year's competition will continue today with recitations from eight more participants. The event will be concluded tomorrow evening, when the champion Qari and Qariah of the competition will be announced.
