Upgrading the drainage and sewerage system, conservation of the beach coasts and river banks and tackling flooding issues continues to be the main focus of the Ministry of Development through the Department of Drainage and Sewerage.

Through the projects that have been implemented, the government has been able to reduce the flood prone areas to 55 percent and hopes to further reduce the flood-risk areas from the current 343 square kilometres to 270 square kilometres in 5 years time through projects proposed in the 11th National Development Plan.

The Minister of Development in his deliberations explained that in line with the strategic plan of the Department of Drainage and Sewerage to reduce flooding in a number of flood prone areas, a number of measures have been carried out through projects such as the construction of a Retention Pond, upgrading the main out fold drainage system and constructing concrete drains to enhance the drainage system connectivity, deepening and widening river downstream, carrying out feasibility studies on the Brunei and Tutong rivers for the construction of barrages in a number strategic locations and conducting studies for the improvement of the drainage system in the Belait District.
