There are many reasons to eat broccoli. It’s nutritious, suppresses appetite, and lowers risk of diseases. Now, research shows that sulforaphane, a compound found in broccoli can help prevent prostate cancer and lower risk of colon cancer. This compound is also found in other cruciferous veggies including Brussels sprouts and cabbage.
It’s worth noting that young sprouts of broccoli have higher concentrations of this cancer-fighting compound. In fact, 3-day old broccoli sprouts have up to 50 times more anti-cancer compounds than mature broccoli (including sulforaphane).
How broccoli fights cancer
Sulforaphane has been proven to support normal cell function and division. And it also kills cancerous cells. According to research, you can lower risk of prostate cancer by 60 percent by consuming 3 servings of broccoli a week.
The risk of prostate cancer increases as men get older – so you should increase intake of broccoli and cruciferous vegetables as you grow older.
In this study, researchers found that men who consumed large amounts cruciferous veggies lowered risk of prostate cancer. In another study, patients with early stage prostate cancer prevented the cancer from spreading by increasing intake of cruciferous veggies.
Prostate cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in American men. So increasing intake of broccoli will definitely help reduce cancer cases.
The fact that broccoli is rich in Sulphur can also help prevent cancer. Sulphur promotes detoxification and consequently lowers risk of cancer. And its fiber content will clean the digestive tract and lower risk of colon cancer.
Increase bioavailability of sulforaphane
Lastly, you can increase the bioavailability of sulforaphane by eating broccoli with foods that contain myrosinase. These foods include: wasabi, mustard seeds, arugula, daikon radishes, and coleslaw. Be careful not to overcook broccoli because you’ll end up losing all the anti-cancer compounds. Steam it for less than 5 minutes.
Eating broccoli with tomatoes can even prevent different cancers. Tomatoes also have bioactive compounds that have anti-cancer properties. In one animal study, researchers used a combination of broccoli and tomatoes to treat prostate cancer.
