BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The Brunei Islamic Religious Council and the Ministry of Religious Affairs have never given permission for any collections to be made meant for the repair of the Kampung Mentiri National Housing Scheme Mosque that was badly damaged due to a fire recently.

The statement was made following the spread through media social information in relation to the collection of donations for the mosque's repair that was made viral to the public through the social media, Whatsapp. In the statement, the Brunei Islamic Religious Council and the Ministry of Religious Affairs stressed that the information disseminated is deemed not valid and false.

The behaviour of disseminating invalid information as well as those that are false and made up is an offence and can be legally reported under the Public Order Act, Chapter 1-4-8 Section 34, that is any person who, whether orally or in writing or by any other means, spreads false reports or makes false statements likely to cause public alarm or despondency, can face imprisonment for three or fined 3 thousand dollars.  The Ministry of Religious Affairs stresses to the public not to, at anytime, be involved in issuing and spreading invalid and unfounded information. Social media and application users are also reminded not to easily believe suspicious information as well as refer to sources of known validity.
