The National Road Safety Council has reminded cyclists, joggers and pedestrians to be extra cautious and alert of their surroundings to prevent any untoward incidents. The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications, in his capacity as the Chairman of the National Road Safety Council, also issued a reminder to motorists to reduce their vehicles' speeds, as well as be considerate and cautious when approaching cyclists, joggers and pedestrians and provide a minimum distance gap of 1.5 metres. Awang Haji Azhar bin Haji Ahmad issued the reminder in an interview with RTB this morning, on the sidelines of a visit to an accident site which involved a cyclist recently around the side road from the Brunei International Airport, heading towards Lambak and the bridge towards Manggis Complex.
According to Awang Haji Azhar, the council is currently formulating an approach and identifying zones which will be permitted and restricted to cyclists and joggers. They are also urged to make use of places such as parks as well as a controlled area at specific times such as during the Bandarku Ceria to carry out their activities.
The National Road Safety Council will also be issuing an advisory leaflet containing clear advises on the responsibilities of motorists, cyclists and roadside joggers, as well as the correct etiquette while on the road. Since early January until the first week of May this year, 1023 accident cases have been recorded, which involved 5 cyclists and 2 pedestrians. 10 casualties have been recorded as a result of the accidents, of which one was a pedestrian. Also joining the visit was Doctor Haji Supry bin Haji Awang Ladi, the Director of Land Transport as the Second Deputy Chairman of the National Road Safety Council.
