The increasing number of ASEAN strategies in upholding the Drug-Free ASEAN reflects a growing understanding that the drug issue cannot be tackled by one country alone. Although Brunei Darussalam's 2016 drug situation was well contained, the country also recognised that even with its best efforts, it cannot address the drug problem alone. Awang Haji Muhd Jaffari bin Haji Mahadi, Acting Director of the Narcotics Control Bureau underlined the matter at the Opening Ceremony of the 7th ASEAN Airport Interdiction Task Force, AAITF Meeting, yesterday

According to Awang Haji Muhd Jaffari, with ASEAN economic integration that promotes the free flow of goods, services and people, it would inevitably increase the number of illegal trade a transnational crimes within the region. With transnational crimes, comes complexity. Therefore, the need to build and maintain collaborative partnerships while strengthening cross-border and inter-agency cooperation in order to response to growing complex transnational organized crime in the region is eminent.

The two day meeting aimed to strengthen the cooperation between the member states particularly in the sharing and exchange of information in support of interdiction of drug trafficking through international airports and to coordinate cross-border investigation and operations. AAITF was established under the ASEAN Senior Officials on Drug Matters, ASOD Sectoral Body in 2012 as an initiative to address the increasing threats of drug trafficking at the international airports in the ASEAN region.
