SINGAPORE

DPMM FC will meet the winner of the preliminary round match between Ceres La Salle from the Philippines and Garena Young Lions in the quarter-final of the RHB Singapore Cup 2016 following a team draw at the Connaught Drive in Singapore yesterday.

The reigning S. League winners have been drawn in Pot C alongside defending Singapore Cup champions Albirex Niigata (S), 2014 winners Balestier Khalsa and three-time winners Tampines Rovers FC.

Ceres La Salle, who will be making their debut in the competition, could provide stern opposition for the Gegar Gegar men as they are currently top in Group E of the AFC Cup which also feature Tampines Rovers and Malaysian giants Selangor.

On the other hand, Garena Young Lions are languishing at the bottom of the S League with only a win to their name and were recently in the receiving end of a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of the S League holders at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.

Should DPMM FC reach the semi-finals for a third season running, they will face either Tampines, Nagaworld PC or Global FC, the team they beat to secure third place last term.

Meanwhile, the all-Singapore ties in the preliminary rounds include Geylang International FC taking on Warriors FC while last year runners-up Home United FC will be hoping to go one better starting with a tricky encounter against in-form Hougang United FC.

Defending Singapore Cup champions and current S League leaders Albirex Niigata (S) will take on the winner of the

Geylang and Warriors match while Balestier Khalsa play the winner of the Home United and Hougang match.

Nagaworld FC of Cambodia and Global FC of the Philippines, the other invited teams in the tournament will play each other as Tampines Rovers FC await in the quarter-finals. .

The guest of honour was Minister for Communications and Information, Dr. Yaacob Ibrahim. Also present were Awang Zainudin Nordin, President of the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) and Lim Chin, Chief Executive Officer of S League.
