Stalls of Ramadhan

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Today is the first day that Muslims in Brunei Darussalam perform the Ramadhan fast. As usual, the month of Ramadhan is known for the rows of Ramadhan stalls in all four districts which offer a variety of food and drinks for Muslims to break their fast.

Every year around Bandar Seri Begawan, Ramadhan stalls such as the ones near the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium and the parking area opposite to the Royal Regalia Building in the capital are among the prime locations for Muslims in the country to get a variety of food and drinks to break their fast. Stalls such as these also help those who do not have the time to prepare their own food. Aside from that, the price of food and drinks, which are sold for as low as a dollar, also entice people to flock to these areas. The encouraging response from the public has provided a source of income for vendors at these stalls. People however are reminded to manage their spending wisely so as to prevent any wastage.

In the Temburong District, some 34 stalls are set up opposite the Civic Centre Complex field. Vendors sell a variety of readily-cooked food and drinks to satisfy the visitors. Some of them also sell desserts and grill fish and chicken, which are available for takeaways. The Ramadhan Stalls open from half-past one in the afternoon, except for Fridays which start at two in the afternoon. Some of the vendors told RTB the opportunity gives them a chance to earn a side income in supporting their family. Visitors are happy to note the involvement of youths in such business. They said the number of young people taking up small-scaled business is increasing from year to year.
