The commemoration of Pancasila Day in Ende, the birthplace of Indonesia’s state ideology of five principles, in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), has been marked with a pledge to fight against radicalism.

“As the regent of the city where Pancasila was born, I’m calling on all societal elements to strengthen our unity as a nation. Let’s start from Ende to work for Indonesia. From Ende, Pancasila’s birthplace, let’s fight against radicalism,” Ende regent Marselinus Pettu told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

Ende is the place where the Dutch colonial government exiled Sukarno, one of the two proclaimers of Indonesian independence, from 1934 to 1938.

Marselinus said it was in Ende that Bung Karno got the ideas that would be later formulated into the principles of Pancasila. Under a breadfruit tree, he said, Bung Karno sat and started dreaming of the state ideology.

“To commemorate his meritorious service, the government has declared June 1 as the birthday of Pancasila. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has determined June 1 as a national holiday starting from June 1 this year,” said Marselinus, after the celebration of Pancasila Day, which was attended by Villages, Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration Minister Eko Putro Sandjojo.

“We want to say to the world that Pancasila is our home. And without Ende, Indonesia would not have a state ideology. Let’s strengthen our unity, from Ende for Indonesia,” said Marselinus. (ebf)
