A delegation of lawyers from the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) recently visited Jerudong International School (JIS) for a career session on the legal profession.
The initiative, jointly organised by the Attorney General's Chambers and the Careers Department of Jerudong International School, marked the second time such a session had been held, following the success of last year's inaugural session in March 2015, according to a press release.
"We aim to help students and parents make informed, well-researched decisions about universities that are tailored to the needs of the individual pupil and their family. This is why unique opportunities such as this one are so crucial, especially for Year 12 students about to make their applications," Russell Mann, Dean of Higher Education at JIS, said, adding "there is no better way to find out about being a lawyer than meeting some first-hand."
The team, comprising of Christopher Ng, Vuina Song, Tracy Valencia Lai, Dayang Siti Khalillah binti Haji Hussin and Dayang Rabiqah Natasha Halim binti Mohd Yusof from the Attorney General's Chambers, met with a group of 20 students from the school, all aspiring to study law in the near future.
Held in an informal Q&A format, the session saw students raise all kinds of questions, ranging from advice about applications, work-life balance and the ethics involved, to what the different fields of law actually involve and the skills needed to get ahead in the profession.
Among the information imparted by the lawyers was the fact that students should do their best to take advantage of the work attachment opportunities offered in Brunei Darussalam's legal industry, such as in the Attorney General's Chambers and private law firms, so as to get a true feel for what a lawyer's work is actually like.
Mann said, "Sessions such as these not only give students the chance to find out more about the profession, but can lead to valuable work placements that really can be the difference between being accepted or rejected into university courses. Law is highly competitive, and having personal experience from an attachment that you can discuss in your personal statement really makes you stand out."
Schools and educational institutions interested in such talks and local students interested in work attachment opportunities with the Attorney General's Chambers are invited to write in to the Attorney General's Chambers and address their requests to the Attorney General, Attorney General's Chambers, the Law and Courts Building, Jalan Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha, Bandar Seri Begawan BA 1910 Brunei Darussalam.
