Court Rejects Sextortionist's Appeal for Reduced Sentences

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The High Court yesterday dismissed the appeal of a man for a reduction in sentences of two years' jail and two strokes of the cane for offences of extortion noting that the punishment is not excessive.

The defendant, Adie Norfaizal bin Mohamad, has no cause for complaint, said Justice Dato Paduka Steven Chong as the offences involved two different victims on separate occasions.

Justice Dato Paduka Chong highlighted that this is a case of extortion by using the instant messaging application known as 'WeChat' and serves as a cautionary tale of the dangers in the indiscreet use of such medium.

In November and December 2013, Adie used 'WeChat' to pose as a girl and lured two unwitting men into sending nude photographs of themselves to him after he had first sent them nude photographs of a girl which he obtained from the Internet.

Adie then threatened to upload the nude photos of the two men on Facebook unless they paid him cash.

He asked for $3,000 from one and $5,000 from the other.

The trapped men made police reports and Adie was arrested.

DPP Dayangku Didi binti Pengiran Latiff appeared for the Public Prosecutor.
