Palace names ‘focal person’ on war on drugs

MANILA, PHILIPPINES

A Malacañang executive has been designated as the ‘focal person’ in handling inquiries and interventions related to the government’s campaign against illegal drugs.

President Duterte designated Aurora Ignacio, Assistant Secretary of the Office of the President to the post, citing “the exigency of the service.”

In Presidential Directive No. 5, Ignacio has been authorized to “receive inquiries or clarifications and provide the necessary intervention on matters pertaining to the government’s anti-illegal drugs campaigns.

“As focal person, she shall also ensure that those offering assistance to the said campaign are immediately acted upon and, whenever necessary, refer the same to the agencies concerned,” it added.

The order was signed by Duterte last July 4 but released only last Thursday by the Palace.

Asked if Ignacio will serve as spokesperson on matters related to the war on drugs, Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said he would still check the matter.

The designation of Ignacio comes amid heavy criticisms from groups here and abroad on the high death toll related to the government’s brutal crackdown on illegal drugs.

President Duterte has repeatedly defended his deadly war on drugs, saying he has a sworn duty to protect the Filipino nation from the menace.
