​Establishment of Pusat Pembangunan Kapasiti, PPK, or Centre for Capacity Building is the government's new initiative that offers training for Brunei citizens to qualify for various jobs in the private sector including foreign direct investment companies. Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamenteri Retired Colonel Dato Seri Setia (Doctor) Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar, Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister's Office, when met during PPK 'MARKET DAY' at the Centre, the former Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Masna Secondary School, said PPK targets over 2 thousand 800 job opportunities for local citizens by next year.

 

Yang Berhormat Pehin said this year, about 1 thousand job vacancies has been generated from the centre's establishment and that the response was very good. The courses that will be held at the centre will take 3 to 6 months. This is to give youth the opportunity to experience what the career world is really like through the industrial sector. The current focus is on the construction industry. Youth trained for the job are expected to be able to form an industry-ready workforce.

 

Also present were Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Ibrahim, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister of Finance; Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, Acting Minister of Education; Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Mohd Roselan bin Haji Mohamad Daud, Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister's Office; and Dato Seri Paduka Haji Hisham bin Haji Mohammad Hanifah, Deputy Minister of Finance.

 

Some 13 training programmes are being offered, including those for 'Scaffolder', 'Rigger', 'Welder', 'Mechanical Fitter' and Heavy-vehicle Driver. Trainees will undergo courses for 3 or 6 months at the Centre for Capacity Building, formerly Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Masna Secondary School. The first intake is expected to begin the courses of their choice in September and December this year. Yang Berhormat Pehin also watched live job demonstrations presented by several companies.

 

PPK Market Day is open for 5 days from 9 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon. The public, especially Bruneians looking for jobs are welcome to the Centre for Capacity Building to register directly for the programmes of their interest. A number of local employees in the industrial sector shared their experiences.
