Việt Nam wishes to strengthen its partnership with Russia in an extensive and effective manner to bring benefits to both countries, President Trần Đại Quang said yesterday.

He was speaking at a reception held for visiting Secretary of the Security Council of Russia, General Nikolai Patrushev in Hà Nội.

President Quang noted that during his visit to Russia in June, the leaders of both sides had discussed major orientations and specific measures to strengthen bilateral affiliations in the future, including fostering co-ordination in ensuring national security and coping with non-traditional security challenges.

He stressed that Việt Nam highly values its defence and security ties with Russia based on signed agreements as well as existing mechanisms such as co-operation deals between the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Defence of Việt Nam and Russia’s Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Defence, and Security Council.

He also said Việt Nam welcomes Russia’s role in the Asian-Pacific region as well as an enhanced role at regional security forums such as the East Asia Summit, the ASEAN Regional Forum, the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus. Việt Nam is also willing to co-ordinate closely with Russia at these forums, he added.

President Quang also stated that Việt Nam hopes to strengthen cooperation with Russia in UN peacekeeping. He said constructive engagement of Russia was very important for maintaining maritime security cooperation, and ensuring peace and stability in the region.

He requested Russia to continue assisting Việt Nam by training officials in its defence and security sectors.

General Nikolai Patrushev briefed his host on the outcomes of talks held with Minister of Public Security Tô Lâm and his meeting with Defence Minister Ngô Xuân Lịch.

He thanked Việt Nam for sending a delegation to join the eighth international high-level security meeting in the Russian region of Tver in May and making positive contributions to event’s success. -- VNS
