BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

A local man was sentenced to 26 months' jail with three strokes of the cane by the Intermediate Court yesterday for attempted theft and theft of money from donation boxes at the Kampong Kilanas Mosque last month, which was caught on CCTV camera.

Mohammad Amli bin Haji Matadir, 35, committed attempt of theft and the theft of $20 donation money from the mosque at 9am on March 7 and 8.

Defence counsel Sheikh Noordin bin Sheikh Mohammad sought for the court's consideration to impose a probation order.

DPP Aiman Zakaria urged the court to take into account the seriousness of the case, in which the defendant had disrespected a place of worship by committing the theft.

Judge Pengiran Hajah Hanani binti Pengiran Haji Metussain, during Mohammad Amli's sentencing, took into account the defendant's early guilty plea and being a first offender, whilst also considering the seriousness of the case.
