Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with State Street Brunei Sdn Bhd for a variety of programmes aimed at boosting financial literacy amongst local students.
Signing on behalf of UBD was Vice-Chancellor Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz, while representing State Street was Wai-Kwong Seck, the CEO of Asia-Pacific at State Street.
The signing ceremony formalised cooperation in various programmes, including a stock pitch competition to boost understanding of equity investment, a series of talks by State Street executives and internship opportunities at State Street's Brunei office.
The programmes are aimed at equipping UBD students with practical finance knowledge and skills, as part of experiential learning during their Discovery Year.
"State Street is delighted to partner with the premier institution of higher education in Brunei, marking of our latest university partnership in an Asean country," said Wai-Kwong Seck.
"Brunei is taking steps to fuel the growth of its financial sector and move towards closer Asean integration by launching a standalone stock exchange. State Street is committed to this region, and by leveraging our experience and expertise in financial services, we hope to work with UBD in nurturing more local talents to support the region's economic development."
The UBD-State Street Brunei MoU is the latest in a series of active collaborations between UBD and educational institutions around the world, spanning six continents.
UBD was the fastest-rising university in Asia in 2015, moving up 57 places from 171 to 180 in 2014, to 118 in the Quacquarelli-Symonds (QS) Asian University Rankings last year.
Its success in the rankings can be attributed to an innovative curriculum framework that includes the Discovery Year programme, where students spend two semesters, or one academic year, undertaking experiential learning in the form of studying abroad, community outreach, internship or incubation projects.
